The GUFC leagues have now completed atheir third season and have grown from strength to strength.
This season has been the best yet with more competition, more teams and more spectators with sometimes around 1 000 people attending on a Saturday afternoon at Rooirivierrif.
In the u/12 league Leopards took on Vipers. Leopards scored very early on through Sean Varty before Oliver Roghoff equalised. Varty scored again, but Enzo got Vipers back on level terms.
However, in the second half Varty took over and scored two more for Leopards.
The big u/12 game of the day was when Falcons took on Seven Stars. Both teams, one and two in the league, played good football.
The league’s highest scorer, Matthew Moody, broke free and rounded the Stars keeper for his 27th goal of the season.
Stars came back and added two goals through Vuyisile and Lihle. Falcons won a corner which Moody took very quickly, catching the defence still trying to get organised and Keegan Steventon coolly finished.
Despite chances for both in the second half the game remained a draw and Falcons retained their league title.
Eagles took on Saints and ran out as winners by 7-0.
Seven Stars played their final game against Rosemoor in a very tight game only settled by an Akhona Wana goal in favour of Stars.
In the u/15 league Rovers took on Eagles in a battle of 1st versus 2nd. A game marked by more yellow and red cards than goals eventually ended up 2-0 in favour of league champions Rovers.
In game two Seven Stars took on Smartspace United. In a very tight game Stars scored four goals with two in reply for Smartspace.
In the final game Falcons took a three goal lead with Matthew Moody, Meyer "The Mad" scoring a blistering volley and then a superb lob from the half-way line by Morné Gabriel.
However, Eden did not not lay down and take it and the ever dangerous Maurizo Lass scored a hattrick to make the score 3-3.
In the u/17 league DR George and OAM could still win the league at the start of the day. DR played Evergreens and needed to win.
They took an early lead, but then suffered from a defensive mistake with a defender heading back over his own goal keeper’s head. Despite some frenetic football, the teams could not be separated.
LIFE Community Services and OAM played another highly competitive game in the final game. The score of 1-1 was enough to see OAM crowned champions.
Saturday 8 May will see the start of the George Youth Knockout Cup series.
