GEORGE NEWS - The First National Bank (FNB) Football First Programme marked its 6th year of developing and nurturing gifted u.13 and u.15 boys and girls.
The programme, which was attended by football clubs from some parts of the Garden Route, took place at Lawaaikamp Stadium on Saturday 29 July.
The programme was founded as a legacy project following FNB's involvement in the 2010 Fifa World Cup. In its six years, it has attracted more than 29 000 young football players from 39 schools across five regions - Thohoyandou, George, Mthatha, Pietermaritzburg and Kimberley.
The young players are trained by coaches selected in collaboration with the South African Football Association (Safa) and they undergo annual refresher courses to maintain and develop their skills.
In 2016 more than 30 youngsters from across the country who have come through the ranks of the programme were scouted by prominent clubs and some of them are now playing in National First Division (NFD) teams.
The George Local Football Association (LFA) u.15 team was crowned as this year's champions after defeating Plettenberg Bay 4-0 in the finals. The young ladies' team from George also performed very well in the tournament.
