GEORGE NEWS - Hoekwil Primary School has made steady progress in promoting reading and literacy through the growth of its school library, a project that began five years ago shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic.
What started as a small initiative to support learners' reading development has grown into a valuable resource for the school.
Today, the library holds more than 1 000 books, giving the learners greater access to reading material while encouraging a love of books from an early age.
The library's success is rooted in strong community involvement. Liesel Mayne and Shané Brink played key roles in supporting Grade Three teacher Michele Beukes when she established the library. Fundraising efforts, including pancake sales supported by the Vleie Church, helped raise funds for books and shelves.
Over the past year, the library was further expanded with the addition of four new bookshelves. Continued support from parents and community members who sponsor books has ensured that the collection keeps growing.
These little ones explore a new world in books.
The school's next goal is to secure a dedicated space for the library. Currently housed in the school hall, the library takes up space needed for other activities. Hoekwil Primary hopes to acquire a sponsored con-tainer or classroom to serve as a permanent library.
The school has thanked the com-munity for its ongoing support and invited anyone who may be able to assist to come forward, emphasising the lasting value of investing in reading and education.
