WRX
Unlike the new GT generation Impreza which again features a hatchback bodystyle to supplement the sedan, the WRX will be available in the latter configuration only with exterior changes consisting of a new grille and lower air intake, redesigned LED headlights with corner control and new double-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels.
Available as option, the new Performance Package adds eight-way electric Recaro front seats, red brake callipers with upgraded brake pads and removal of the previous sunroof to save weight.
Inside, the changes are a tad more substantial with upgraded materials, rear seat armrest with integrated cupholders, redesigned door pulls, ticker glass and a 5.9-inch touchscreen display as opposed to the previous 4.5-inch setup. New safety tech consists of EyeSight Driver Assist and Vehicle Hold, while revised front and rear suspension and fettled electric power steering completes the changes.
As before, power still comes from a 2.0-litre flat-four turbo now developing 200 kW with Subaru's famed Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system sending power to all four wheels via a new six-speed manual or Lineartronc CVT box.
Prices range from $26 695 (R365 188) for the base WRX to $30 995 (R424 013) for the top-range WRX Limited.
WRX STI
Benefitting from the same cosmetic and safety additions as the WRX with Y-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels replacing the 18s, the STI gains a updated Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) system which drops the previous mechanical limited slip-diff for a wholly electronic setup for smoother response.
In addition, new brake pads, six-piston Brembo brake callipers with drilled rotors and standard Recaro sports on the flagship STI Limited complete the changes.
As with the WRX, the STI retains its 2.5-litre turbocharged flat-four but with a bump in power to 227 kW with the six-speed manual the sole transmission offered.
Pricing starts at $35 195 (R481 469) with the STI Limited retailing for $39 995 (R547 133). It however remains unknown as to wheather the changes will apply to South African models asl well.
