According to Britain's Autocar Magazine, the hot i3 will reportedly wear the S designation instead of the hallowed M badge, and, apart from incorporating a number of exterior revisions to differentiate itself from lesser models, a more powerful version of the existing 125 kW / 250 Nm electric motor.

While BMW has remained tight lipped on the rumours, it further states that the regular i3 would also receive improvements to the existing 94Ah model, allowing for a range increase from the current 195 miles (313 km), "to beyond 200 miles (320 km) for the first time". No mention of the i3 Range Extender (REx) was however made.

Along with the exterior and powertrain revisions, the i3 will also get minor interior tweaks consisting of a updated infotainment system and colour choices. It still remains to be seen whether the changes will be added to the local i3 range in due course.

Expect the refreshed i3 to make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with sales likely to commence early next year.
