Fast forward to 2018, and the S-class remains the flagship model that many look to for the latest and greatest gadgets. It might not look all that different compared to the previous model, but as I found out recently, it comes equipped with even more tech and new engines.
The looks
The S-class is without doubt an imposing car on the road. It is large, partly because for the first time ever, it will only be available in long wheelbase form for South Africa, the sole exception being the “regular length” AMG S63.
Some of the subtle changes to the car include a new front facia which sees new, more modern headlights complete with daytime running LEDs, a more prominent grille and a new bumper. The rear lights have also been enhanced and feature a crushed crystal-like element.
A tech loaded interior
Like the exterior, the interior looks similar to that of the previous model, but again comes with a few noteworthy enhancements.
For starters, the most noticeable addition is the newly designed steering wheel with its touch sensitive buttons. The dashboard remains clean and uncluttered. All the technology is hidden within the two large high-definition screens, with one serving as display for the infotainment system and the other as the customisable instrument cluster.
The interior is a blend of technology as well as classic elements such as the round air-vents, gloss wood trim and quality leather accents. It is also extremely comfortable as you would expect from a car in this segment.
Once inside, the outside world does not intrude. In fact, the cabin is so well insulated that the e-tag devices would not function. It is however the rear of the car that really highlights its luxurious elements.
Here you are greeted by large rear seats with lounge functionality. They are also heated and air-conditioned and offer massaging functions with the now iconic hot stone function. There are screens behind the front seats and all the infotainment features can be controlled via a remote. Privacy glass and rear roller blinds also enhance the element of privacy.
Leg room is ample, so much so that I could straighten my legs without touching the seat in front. What’s even more impressive is the fact that the front passenger seat can be controlled from the rear. Other niceties include a cooler box and a rear fridge as an option.
What about the drive?
As one would expect, the ride is sublime. The car floats along the asphalt much like a luxury yacht glides along the coast of Monte Carlo. The suspension, as well as the Magic Body Control systems, has been refined even more for 2018.
This means that they now deliver more comfort than before. It also constantly adjusts the damping depending on the road surface. A new Curve Body Control feature means that the body remains level through the corners.
Engines
Mercedes-Benz will be offering a host of new and efficient engines with the S-class. I managed to get behind the wheel of the S350d first. After five minutes, I was convinced it was the one to get. It offers 210kW/600Nm from its 3.0-litre displacement.
There is also an S400d which uses the same engine but delivers 250kW/700Nm. The six-cylinder engine also features a new configuration; instead of the older V arrangement, it is now a straight-six. There is also a new turbocharger offering instant torque while the brand’s 9G-Tronic gearbox does its job without notice.
I also got some seat time in the S560, powered by a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 which develops 345kW/700Nm. Surprisingly, it is so refined that apart from a slight burble, you don’t even notice the engine under the bonnet.
Before the day was up, I got to experience the AMG S63. It is as luxurious as the others, however, it has been designed so that you can experience the motor.
It too uses a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 but develops 450kW/900Nm. This motor will get this lounge on wheels from zero to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds. If that’s not enough and you want even more power, then there is the AMG S65 with its 463kW/1000Nm 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12.
Verdict
Overall, the new range of S-class models offer a slight refinement on the overall package. While its rivals include the BMW 7-series and certain models from Rolls-Royce and Bentley, it finds itself in a segment that not many South Africans are too concerned about. That said, if you are a crypto-currency millionaire, then the new S-class is most definitely worth a look.
