Speaking at the Munich automaker’s annual general meeting earlier this week, Harald Krügerstated that 2018 would be “the year of X” in referring to the already launched X2, X3 and X4. He reportedly, however, didn’t make mention of the X7, which will likely only be unveiled in 2019.
Already spotted on a number of occasions testing, the new X5, which will carry the G05 internal moniker, will ride on the same CLAR platform as the 5 and 7-series, which reports claim suggest will drop the newcomer’s kerb weight by around 300 kg.
While not seen so far, the interior will more than likely mirror that of the 5-series and feature the brand’s latest iDrive infotainment system with 7.0 operating system, the new all-digital instrument cluster and the same level of driver assistance systems and in-car tech as its sedan siblings.
Motivation will come courtesy from a range of four and six-cylinder turbo-petrol and turbodiesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid in the X5 iPerformance. The flagship X5 M will meanwhile retain the 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8, but with power lifted to the same 441 kW as the M5. Despite BMW mulling a possible Competition Package (CP) version of the X3, no word on an X5 CP has yet been made.
