GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality is urging residents and visitors to refrain from using active railway tracks in the Outeniqua Mountain and forest areas following an increase in dangerous and illegal activity along the Powervan George rail route.
The railway line used by Powervan George remains fully operational. Despite this, there has been a concerning rise in hikers, walkers, mountain bikers, photographers, and members of the public accessing and utilising the railway tracks as pathways or recreational areas.
Being on an active railway line is illegal and poses a serious safety risk.
Trains are unable to swerve and require a significant stopping distance. Under normal operating conditions, it can take more than 15 seconds for the Powervan train to come to a complete stop.
While this may appear sufficient, it is often not enough to prevent a collision if individuals, children, or animals are on or near the tracks.
Recent reports indicate multiple near-miss incidents involving:
•Individuals walking or sitting on the railway line
•Hikers wearing noise-cancelling headphones and failing to hear the approaching train
•Mountain bikers riding directly on the tracks
•Dogs off-leash running onto the railway line
•Children playing in close proximity to the tracks
“We appeal to all residents and visitors to respect railway safety regulations and to make responsible choices when enjoying our natural surroundings. The Outeniqua Mountains and surrounding forests remain key recreational and tourism assets for the region. However, public safety must remain a priority,” said Sharon House, Acting Tourism Manager.
George Municipality calls on the public to:
•Avoid accessing railway tracks at all times
•Remain alert in areas where rail operations are active
•Supervise children closely
•Keep pets on a leash and under strict control
•Remove headphones when near railway infrastructure
George Municipality requests the cooperation of all community members in preventing avoidable accidents and ensuring the continued safe operation of rail services in the area.
