GEORGE NEWS - The World Memon Organisation (WMO), a global community-based charity with eight chapters around the world, has launched their WMO2 Project which aims to plant over three million trees globally.
Inaugurated in 2022 by the WMO's Youth Wing, this project aims to empower and educate youth while making a positive impact on the environment.
"In Africa, the WMO2 Project has taken root with the planting of fruit and indigenous trees in schools and communities that serve less fortunate populations," says Sadaf Vahedna, head of the WMO Africa Youth Wing.
"These trees not only provide essential sustenance but also offer shade and shelter to those in need, contributing to a better quality of life for local residents.
She says that, to date, the project has raised $300 000 in funding from supporters around the world, which is a testament to the global community's commitment to environmental preservation and youth empowerment.

Trees planted in George
In Africa, more than 600 trees have been planted at various schools and community sites, with a significant concentration in the George municipal area.
The WMO2 Project has a multifaceted approach. Says Vahedna, "Apart from providing a source of nutrition to children, we are raising environmental awareness and creating a sense of shared responsibility by employing local unemployed youth to help with the school plantings.
"We want children, teachers, school staff and the local community to all have a connection with the trees. That is the only way we will see these trees survive in the long run. In George we have partnered with the Precious Tree Project, that has done a phenomenal job for us. We have planted trees at 10 primary schools, six secondary schools and two community centres in George alone."
