Update
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Several agencies met today, 9 February to establish a way forward in response to the recent suspected outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) on a Hartenbos dairy farm.
The test results from the samples taken at the farm are expected tomorrow, 10 February.
In a joint statement by Agri Western Cape and the Garden Route District Municipality this afternoon, it said a multi-agency command centre engagement was held between the various relevant organisations.
It said that according to State Veterinarian, Dr Leana Janse van Rensburg, samples have been collected from cattle displaying symptoms consistent with FMD the dairy farm, and further confirmed that several calves on the same farm have died.
The statement said a provisional quarantine area with a 10km radius was established around the suspected farm and several control points have been set up. More control points are expected to be established.
It said the only livestock allowed to enter the area are those for slaughter at any of the abattoirs and that 600 doses of vaccines were also received today.
Key stakeholders and control points are being determined at the moment by the relevant authorities, such as the police, provincial traffic and local law enforcement officers.
The statement said another update will be published on 11 February.
