GEORGE NEWS - The speeding camera 'holiday' in George was short-lived - a range of new yellow flashinators were installed across town recently.
The new cameras aren't much different from their predecessors, except that they have had a bit of a facelift.
According to George Municipality's Director of Community Services Dawie Adonis, the main difference is in the camera housings, which vary between companies.
"The cameras must comply with the standards set by the Technical Committee for Standards and Procedures for Traffic Control and Traffic Control Equipment (TCSP). In the Western Cape, it has been agreed that fixed cameras and those housed in boxes will be painted yellow," he said.
Camera locations are approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions, based on traffic surveys and accident data.
The total number and types of cameras also vary between fixed-site cameras, cameras housed in boxes, and mobile cameras - so don't expect to see the same yellow box at the same place every day.
Readers can prepare themselves to smile for the camera for the immediate future as the municipality has signed a three-year contract with the new service provider, Traffic Management Technologies.
