Update
GEORGE NEWS - Residents of informal settlements across Thembalethu took to the streets to march to the George Municipality for basic service delivery on Monday 19 March.
The march, which was organised by Xola Swapi and other community leaders, included people from Mandela Village, Ramaphosa, France, and Kapa.
They marched along Nelson Mandela Boulevard to deliver a memorandum to the George Municipality in York Street.
The memorandum, which was received by mayor Melvin Naik, set out a number of grievances which included their lack of proper housing, sanitation and water.
The municipality was given three days to respond to these grievances. Delivering the memorandum in front of the old city hall Swapi said, "We demand that the George Municipality do something and we give them only three days for this problem to be resolved, especially the toilets and electricity. We are tired of doing Izinyoka (illegal electricity connection)."
Swapi said that as residents of informal settlements they feel they are not treated the same as other residents of George.

"We can see that we are the only location that has to always fight for our problems to be resolved."
Naik and Municipal Manager Trevor Botha have agreed to respond directly to the organisers of the march within three days.
