Update
GEORGE NEWS - The organiser of the Thembalethu service delivery march, Xola Swapi, handed over a memorandum to George Mayor Melvin Naik this morning.
The protest, which had about 150 residents from informal settlements across Thembalethu, was conducted in a peaceful manner.
Addressing the mayor, Swapi said that as residents of informal settlements they feel they are not treated the same as other residents of George. “We can see that we are the only location that has to always fight in order for our problems to be resolved,” said Swapi.
Swapi said their grievances include that they want electricity installed in their shacks, as well as proper sanitation facilities.
Naik and Municipal Manager Trevor Botha have agreed to respond directly to the organisers of the march within three days.
