GEORGE NEWS - It seems that the wish of nationally renowned local artist Elvis Blue (Jan Hoogendyk) to sing the South African national anthem at the next clash between the Springboks and the All Blacks in August, is being looked into by SA Rugby.
Hoogendyk expressed his wishes on his Facebook page and other social media platforms over the weekend asking SA Rugby to give him a shot at his childhood dream. He also asked his fans to share his post far and wide.
"I am Elvis Blue. I am a singer. The Springboks are playing the All Blacks later this year.
"A childhood dream of mine is to sing our anthem at such a game. I'm willing to travel at my own expense, even internationally if that is what it takes. I promise I know all the words to our song and I will sing it with great passion as it should be sung.
"It will be a very big honour and the fulfilment of a life long dream. Please consider it," reads his post.
By Monday morning the post had been shared by nearly 2 000 people, it had 2 300 reactions and 232 people commented on it - all in support of his wish.
According to a spokesperson for SA Rugby, Hoogendyk's request was received and is being looked into.
In a reply on Elvis Blue's Twitter request to SA Rugby, the Springboks official Twitter page said, "Thanks for the offer, @elvisblue.
"We love your pricing and you were great when you sang the anthem for us last time. We have top-secret and special plans for our anthem singers for the New Zealand tests but how's your diary on Heritage Day?"
Hoogendyk sang the national anthem once before in 2013, before a match between the Springboks and Italy.
The Springboks and the All Blacks are scheduled to play in Mbombela Park on 6 August and in Johannesburg on 13 August.
