GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The development of the regional waste management site next to PetroSA in Mossel Bay has encountered further delays and is still not on schedule.
However, PetroSA has agreed to a month-to-month extension for the disposal of waste at its site, provided that the prescribed licence conditions are still adhered to.
This is according to a statement issued by the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) on Thursday 20 that is developing the new site is responsible for operating the temporary site.
A delegation of mayors and municipal managers from the Garden Route on Wednesday 20 November visited the new regional site together with GRDM Mayor Andrew Stroebel.
During the visit, GRDM Waste Manager Johan Gie explained the minimum requirements for initiating waste disposal operations at the facility.
These requirements include the completion of Cell 1A, the access road, weighbridge, leachate and water dams, drainage pipes, guardhouse, weighbridge buildings, and permanent fencing.
Gie detailed some of the challenges faced with completing the project according to its planned schedule.
The main issue has been been rain and wind damage, which caused delays in preparing the surface of Cell 1A. Cell 1A is part of the critical path of the project and needs to be completed for municipalities to start disposing waste.
"In some cases, work had to be restarted multiple times due to the extent of the damage," said Gie.
GRDM Municipal Manager Monde Stratu provided a brief background of the project and its timeline. Work on the site started in September 2023. Work was already behind in February this year. Read more about it here.
Waste from the municipalities of Bitou, Hessequa, George, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn will be transported to the new facility.
Works are ongoing.
The site is located next to PetroSA in Mossel Bay.
