GEORGE NEWS - Why are there water restrictions in George if the dam is full or nearly full?
- Above-average rainfall in the first six months of 2023 has kept the Garden Route Dam level high.
- The dam level drops as soon as rainfall goes down.
- Kaaimans pump station, that adds raw water to the dam, is currently being refurbished with completion only due in July 2024.
- The two existing water treatment works purify 38Ml per day, but current peak water usage averages 42Ml per day. This will increase in summer.
- All our purified drinking water is used up daily and there is no spare capacity.
- A new 20Ml per day extension to the Water Treatment Works is under construction at a cost of approximately R520m and the civil works will be completed by June 2024. The mechanical, electrical and instrumentation installations will only be completed in early 2025.
Take note
Water restrictions remain in place to reduce and manage the demand for potable (drinking) water. South Africa is a water-scarce country.
All residents should, as a general principle, use potable water sparingly at all times. Find water-saving tips and details on restrictions at www.george.gov.za.
