GEORGE NEWS - Recent activity on the property of the historic magistrate's house in Davidson Road has once again sparked questions about the future of the site.
Residents living nearby have previously raised their concerns about crime and antisocial behaviour linked to activities on the property. The Heritage Society has also expressed its concern about the loss of a building that was part of George's history.
George Herald has repeatedly reported on its steady deterioration over the years due to neglect, vandalism and illegal occupation. The house is in ruins, its roof and gables are gone, and there are signs of regular fires being made inside the remaining walls.
Some groundworks have recently been noticed on the property, and trees are also being cleared. This has led to speculation on whether the long-awaited plans for the site might finally be moving forward. The property belongs to the national Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
The paper has approached the department and George Municipality about the work being undertaken, and asked the department whether the property is still earmarked for transfer to the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, as had been indicated several years ago. At the time, the site was being considered for future expansion for the George Hospital.
The newspaper has also requested details about the department's plans for the property and timelines for possible future development.
The municipality said an official of the Building Control Department conducted an inspection of the property and found no building activity taking place, but observed that a private contractor is presently on site to clean the vegetation on the property. The municipality referred the paper to Public Works for further information.
The department's response is being awaited.
