GEORGE NEWS - At least 11 people, four of who are public order policing (Pops) members, sustained moderate to serious injuries when the police van they were travelling in, a double cab Toyota bakkie, overturned at the Oubaai turn-off in Herold's Bay on Wednesday 14 August.
The officers were taking suspects believed to be illegal foreign nationals to the George Police Station after they were arrested in the area earlier that morning.
No fatalities were reported and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
According to a resident who lives on a farm in the area, one of the suspects ran from the scene of the accident onto their farm where an employee, her husband and the farm watch caught him in the bushes.
Ambulance services, police, traffic officials and the fire department arrived on the scene soon after the incident occurred.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies confirmed the incident and said a charge of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated. The cause of the accident still has to be confirmed.
