GEORGE NEWS - The director of corporate services, Bevan Ellman, is currently serving as acting municipal manager while George Municipality remains involved in legal proceedings aimed at reinstating Godfrey Louw.
Louw’s contract ended at the end of February, and Ellman has been acting in the position since.
According to George Municipality’s senior communications officer, Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, Louw was appointed as municipal manager with effect from 15 April 2025 for a maximum period of one year after the next municipal council was elected, subject to an age waiver being approved by the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa.
Mangqwengqwe confirmed Ellman’s acting appointment has been extended for a further three months, until 31 August, with the approval of the MEC for local government, Anton Bredell. This was concluded at a special council meeting on 22 May.
The municipality said the court proceedings regarding Louw’s position have not yet been finalised and that the matter remains sub judice.
“As with any litigation involving a public institution, legal representation and associated costs form part of ensuring that the municipality’s interests and governance responsibilities are properly addressed,” said Mangqwengqwe.
The municipality declined to comment further on legal costs or strategy while the matter is before the courts.
