GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality's vision to always improve the local environment to promote sustainable growth and job creation was shared by Mayor Jackie von Brandis at the George Business Chamber's annual general meeting on Thursday 15 August at Hawthorn Boutique Hotel.
Von Brandis referred to economic growth projections that form part of an economic development plan that is being developed for the municipality.
According to the figures quoted, the current GDP of the city is about R23bn. At the current growth rate of 1,7% per year, it will be just over R25bn by 2030. However, at a growth rate of 4%, this could shoot up to R30bn by 2030 and at 6% growth to just over R32bn, which is what the city would like to aim for, she said.
It is to this end that the growth and economic development strategy is being developed. Von Brandis mentioned various ways they are looking to make it easier to invest and do business in George.
These include creating an investment desk to serve potential investors and businesspeople; simplifying business regulations and reducing red tape; providing support for start-ups through incubators; and unlocking the potential of small pieces of underutilised land.
Creating precincts with specific zoning can also make it easier for development to get started. Water security is a major factor for sustainability and the municipality, together with various other stakeholders, is working on a 30-year water supply plan.
She said infrastructure development is also a core pillar of local economic growth and the municipality is looking at strategies to deliver cost-effective infrastructure programmes. Joint economic development initiatives with local businesses through infrastructure projects are also a possibility, as are incentives and grants for businesses that contribute to job creation and sustainable practices.
The municipality also wants to invest in improving public safety.
Former chairperson Dr Willie Cilliers delivered his final report. He said he was proud of the chamber's contribution to the community and economy.
The George Chamber has the highest income of all chambers in the Western Cape. In the past year, 35 new members joined, bringing the membership to 352. He encouraged the new chairperson, Johannes Jumat, and his board to take the chamber to new heights.
