GEORGE NEWS - It comes as no surprise that the first citizens of George and the Garden Route District have pledged their allegiance to the country’s foremost Old Car Show.
And come 8 February, they will be joined by the provincial minister, Dr Ivan Meyer.
Event founders the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC) celebrated its 36th anniversary last year. The club was formed by a group of old car enthusiasts on 3 June 1988 to offer a ‘home’ to lovers of venerable vehicles in the heart of the Southern Cape.
Ever since, the SCOCC has been providing an outlet for these automobile fans to live out their shared passion for the continued preservation of old cars, with special focus on historical vintage and veteran motor vehicles, motorcycles and still-standing engines.
George executive mayor Jackie von Brandis was present during the GOCS25 media launch at Protea Hotel by Marriott King George on 21 November last year, and will be on hand to address the crowds at the official opening of the event on Saturday 8 February, as will be the mayor of Garden Route District Municipality, Andrew Stroebel.
“I am absolutely delighted to see the Old Car Show thriving in our beautiful city of George! As executive mayor, I extend a warm welcome to all car enthusiasts and visitors attending this fantastic event,” said Von Brandis.
“I wish the organisers a huge success and am confident that this year's show will be an unforgettable experience for all. Thank you for choosing George as your home – we are honoured to host this incredible showcase of vintage vehicles.”
Furthermore, Dr Ivan Meyer – Western Cape minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism since 2024 – will be present on the day to give his vote of confidence to the event, which has been a boon to local tourism for several decades.
Alewijn Dippenaar has been chairman of the GOCS organising committee for three years running and, together with many role-players, has been very busy over the last few months in planning and preparing for the most sought-after old motor show in the country.
Explains Dippenaar: “George Municipality came on board this year as a sponsor of our Old Car Show, and George Tourism has once again pledged its support in the form of marketing on its website and various social media platforms, which will be complemented by a stall on show day.”

At the launch event, SCOCC champion Waldo Scribante provided stats and titbits to tantalise all present in anticipation of GOCS25. “For this show, we decided to bring you a taste of England, as we celebrate timeless British motoring.
“The annual George Old Car show, taking place on the second weekend of every February, is regarded as a highlight on the calendars of car lovers from across South Africa and some other corners of the globe.”
Scribante added that until recently, the event was rated as the second-largest motor show in South Africa. The 2023 and 2024 shows were bumper editions, with up to 13,500 people attending and just over a 1,000 cars, motorbikes and tractors on show.
“I can confidently say that the George Old Car Show is now the biggest of its kind in the country, as the event that previously held top spot only sold 5,500 tickets at their last show.”
