GEORGE NEWS - For the matric class of 2017, Friday 5 January was the final day of reckoning.
Most local schools released their matric results at 11:00 this morning, except for Outeniqua High School that stuck to the tradition of midday.
Debbie Schafer, MEC for Education in the Western Cape was pleased that the province once again achieved the highest percentage of bachelor’s passes in the country, with 39,1% as well as the highest pass rate in mathematics with 73.9%.
York High School
York High School principal, Francois Moll, was ecstatic with the 100% pass rate but emphasised that the important fact is that 78% of the 180 learners achieved the Bachelor's pass.
Dux learner, Christelle Herbst, obtained an average of 94,5%, 7 As and 100% in Afrikaans.
Outeniqua High School
Outeniqua High School achieved a pass rate of 99,4%.
A total of 30 learners obtained an average above 85% and 13 above 90%.
The school boasts with 591 subject distinctions.
Emma Nel, 2017 Dux learner, obtained nine distinctions and an overall average of 95%.
George High School
George High School went against the average, they went up with 2,4% while the province went down with 2,1%.
The school achieved a pass rate of 81,7%.
Eight learners obtained percentages above 70%. The top learner is Kelly-Ann De Koker.
Thembalethu High School
Thembalethu High School deputy principal Edmund Magxaka was disappointed with the matric results at the school. The pass rate fell by 5% from last year’s 76,7% to 71,3% this year.
Magxaka attributes the drop to ill-discipline, among other factors.
“We had extra lessons on weekends and during the holidays, but those learners that should have attended simply stayed away.”
The top learner is Nondabula Vuyokazi with distinctions in Physical science and Life science.
PW Botha College
PW Botha College‘s matric pass rate fell by 15% from 92,4% in 2016 to 77,8% in 2017.
Headmaster Pieter Myburgh said: “We had one calamitous subject which tripped-up many of our learners. We will be investigating what went wrong.”
The top performer was Zinkle Hoco. No PW Botha College learner achieved a distinction.
Pacaltsdorp High School
Pacaltsdorp High School's matric result rose by a whopping 13,5%. The class of 2017 achieved a pass rate of 83,2% compared to the 2016 figure of 70,7%.
Acting Principal Clifton Titus is very pleased with the 26 Bachelor passes the 137 learners achieved. “The teachers and learners all bought into the Education Department’s intervention strategy and worked very hard. The result speaks for itself.”
Bronwyn Carolus was the top achiever.
Parkdende High School
Hours of motivation paid-off at Parkdene High School. The pass rate for 2017 is 76,7%, up 5% from 2016.
The top performer is Wendoline Boesak.
The school had 24 Bachelor passes and 5 distinctions.
“The Department’s winter and spring school was well attended and this just gave the learners the motivation needed for success” said an elated Rodney Cupido, headmaster of Parkdene High School.
