GEORGE NEWS - A great honour has been bestowed upon local George Lions Club member, Pieter Nel, who was recently announced as the District Governor.
Nel is only the second district governor to come from the George Lions.
He was inducted into the Lions Club of George 14 years ago and in 2009 he was awarded the Lion of the Year award. In August that year he became one of the charter members of the Eden Lions Club and in July 2014 he became president.
Two years later he became Zone Chairman, looking after seven clubs and holding various cabinet positions in the district, of which one was Lions Alert.
In July 2017 he was voted in as second Vice District Governor and later that year he transferred back to George Lions where he became first Vice District Governor.
In 2018 he received the Melvin Jones fellowship as well as an international presidential award for leadership.
Just before the Covid-19 pandemic set in, Nel was fortunate to be one of two people from South Africa to attend a training seminar in Chicago, USA. Subsequent to that he was to attend a formal induction ceremony in Singapore; however, this was cancelled.
Nel has now been inducted into the position of District Governor for District 410 W (Western Cape, South Western District, Northern Cape and Namibia). Going into the position Pieter said his theme for the year is "There are no limits to what you can accomplish".
"This will be a difficult year for us as Lions, but we will serve our community where and whenever we are needed," he said.
His District Governor banner is dedicated to all emergency workers across the world who put their lives in danger every time they leave home.
"I acknowledge that the position of District Governor will be extremely challenging during Covid-19, but surrounding me with positive Lions will bring the best out of us, as long as we have fun doing what we do. We serve."
