GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality has confirmed that its vehicle and driving licences offices remain closed and that current licences remain valid until further notice.
Municipal Manager Trevor Botha said the municipality is in the advanced stages of preparing for the re-opening of its licencing offices in line with all Covid-19 health and safety measures.
The traffic department is awaiting a confirmed date and details for the phased opening of the online vehicle and driving licencing systems from provincial and national authorities.
“The public is reminded that the George Municipality is a licencing agent of the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works and can only issue licences once the motor vehicle registration authority has resumed their duties and online licencing systems have been activated.
Similarly, driving and learner licence driving tests can only recommence when the national system is back online and Covid-19 health and safety measures inside testing vehicles and facilities have been sufficiently addressed,” he said.
Driving and learner driving tests will be postponed in the meantime. Applicants will receive an SMS after lockdown has ended, or when the applicable level of lockdown is reached, to confirm new dates.
Current learner’s licences, driving licences, motor vehicle licence disks, temporary permits, professional driving permits and roadworthy certificates remain valid and shall be extended for a further grace period of 30 days from the date when lockdown ends, or when the applicable level of lockdown is reached. Such a date has so far not been issued and will be announced in due course, well in advance.
Validity of motor trading numbers will be extended six months from the date when lockdown ends, or when the applicable level of lockdown is reached. Such a date has so far not been issued and will be announced in due course, well in advance.
