GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - A Covid-19 survivor and community leader from Thembalethu, ANC Councillor Langa Langa, reminds residents to take the virus seriously, keep safe and be kind to those affected by the disease.
Not only did he experience the full force of the virus first-hand, he also lost his sister, Nombeko Beauty Langa, who succumbed as a result of the virus. Langa attended her memorial service on Tuesday 21 July.
"People, especially in Thembalethu, have now become quite scared and concerned about the scourge of the virus," says Langa. "It continues to rise. Thembalethu has become the epicentre of Covid-19 in the whole of the Southern Cape."
In Thembalethu the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 stood on 642 almost two weeks ago (10 July), as shown on the Western Cape Government dashboard of 10 July. Thembalethu was listed as the suburb with the 10th highest number of infections in the province.
Langa was a guest speaker at a Hotspot Awareness activation at Thembalethu Square last Thursday, where he spoke to shoppers about his exposure and recovery from Covid-19.
In a video recording he made especially for George Herald, he talks about his ordeal and the sad fact that people who test positive are stigmatised.
"We have to protect our families, ourselves and those around us - especially the elderly," says Langa. He urges people to only leave their homes when necessary, to wear masks correctly and to keep social distance.
