GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality opened its brand-new municipal offices at 46 Market Street, transforming the long-vacant York Hostel into a modern, accessible hub for residents.
Located near the Go George transport hub, the facility houses the Directorate of Planning and Development, Human Settlements, and Financial and Strategic Services.
The revitalised building offers services like planning applications, housing queries, indigent support and land lease assistance. While cash payments are unavailable, credit card facilities will be introduced.
Fully accessible with a disabled access lift, it aims to reduce travel burdens for residents.
Speaking at the 13 June opening, the acting mayor, Cllr Browen Johnson, called it a historic moment, symbolising a bridge between government and people. He highlighted its strategic location and decentralised services, benefitting vulnerable groups and entrepreneurs. Johnson thanked Municipal Manager Godfrey Louw, contractors and staff for their dedication.
Louw noted the building, which was acquired from Public Works in 2024, had been an eyesore before its renovation. The project, led by Ruwacon, SDK Architects and others, included new windows, roofing, ablution facilities and open-plan layouts. It's expected to boost the CBD's economy.
Cllr Jean Safers praised the project team, particularly Mahlatse Phosa and Delia Power, expressing confidence in their service delivery.
