GEORGE NEWS - In the wake of the recent disaster in George, the George Alert Team (Gat) has taken charge of managing various services on site.
In an official statement made by the Garden Route District Municipality, the Gat emphasised that no additional volunteers are permitted on the disaster site at this time.
"However, there are opportunities for community members to assist at the civic centre, where affected families are receiving care," said Gat's Carl van Blerk.
Volunteers are invited to register via an online form for two-hour shifts at the civic centre. It's crucial for potential volunteers to await contact from the Gat before reporting to the center, as their assistance must align with specific needs.
"While expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support, the GAT encourages individuals to stay informed through the George Alert Team Facebook group and WhatsApp channel," van Blerk said.
They assure the community that relevant requests for assistance will be communicated through these platforms and the media as necessary.
The Gat's coordination ensures that volunteer efforts are effectively utilised to support those affected by the disaster, while maintaining efficient management of the situation.
They also desperately need bananas and small packets of peanuts and raisins for relief workers to be dropped off at 27 Victoria Street to ensure it goes out with one of the meals we send out.
