GEORGE NEWS - The bravery of a security guard employed by Duck Valley International ensured on Thursday 28 April that two suspected copper cable thieves will have to account for their actions.
The guard, Jounade Williams, and his service dog, Miko, were patrolling the fence line between the N2 and the open field next to Mauritz Lammers Antiques (near the Garden Route Mall) at 16:30 on Thursday, when they came across two suspicious-looking men walking in the field in the direction of the mall.
They were carrying a big bag and a metal saw. Williams confronted the men and discovered that the bag was filled to the brim with copper cables.
"After confiscating the saw, I bound the two suspects using cable ties and escorted them to the BP garage near Gateway Lodge where I contacted the police. I warned them not to try and run away as Miko is a very well-trained security dog," said Williams.
It is believed the cables, weighing 23kg, were stolen near the railway line in Victoria Bay.
Mark Rademacher, owner of Duck Valley International, said Williams never lets anybody get away. "He is a very strong security guard and an asset to the area."
Williams points to the area where he saw the suspects.
Police arrived on the scene and the two suspects were arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen goods as they could not account for the cables.
The suspects were placed into custody and were scheduled to appear in the George Magistrate's Court this week. At the time of going to print, the details of their court appearance could not be confirmed.
