GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route celebrated the launch of the second annual Global Entrepreneurship Week 2024 (GEW 2024) with an opening event that united 110 entrepreneurs, community leaders and stakeholders.
The week-long event, themed "Creating Entrepreneurial Communities, Removing Barriers and Welcoming All!", emphasises the power of collaboration in cultivating inclusivity and innovation to unlock the region's entrepreneurial potential.
The theme underscores the importance of addressing challenges such as unemployment, poverty, inequality, and the digital divide through entrepreneurship.
"The Garden Route is a unique and beautiful region with immense untapped potential," said Elrico van Rooyen, chairperson of the local organising committee.
"While we are rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, we face significant socio-economic challenges.
Entrepreneurship can drive job creation, economic growth and innovation, helping to bridge these divides and create a sustainable future for all."
Speeches and presentations by notable figures enriched the event, including MMC for Planning and Economic Development in the George Municipality Marlene Barnard, and MMC for Planning and Economic Development in the Garden Route District Municipality Rosina Ruiters.
John Peters, chief director of the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, shared insights on economic growth strategies, while Prof Annemarie Davis of Unisa's Inhlanyelo Hub delivered a keynote address on the transformative power of entrepreneurship.
The discussions highlighted the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem, focusing on breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for growth.
"We're thrilled to have such a diverse and engaged group of entrepreneurs and stakeholders at this year's launch,” said Ray Carstens, marketing manager for Suff Academy. "We look forward to the rest of the week, where collaboration will continue to spark innovation and growth."
