GEORGE NEWS - With the annual Buffalo Rally last weekend in Hartenbos and bikers and supporters coming from all corners of the country, various roadblocks were held across the province on Thursday 11 April.
At one of these roadblocks, a joint operation by the provincial traffic department and local police on the N2 near the Far Hills hotel, 145 vehicles were stopped within approximately two hours.
Among the vehicles that were stopped, five were declared unroadworthy. Fines to the value of R25 900 were handed out and 52 alcohol tests were performed. Five vehicles were found to have illegal number plates.
While George Herald was on the scene, one person, allegedly an illegal immigrant, was arrested and expired batches of fish and chicken found in two containers on the back of an Opel Corsa bakkie were confiscated. By the time of going to print no statistics regarding results of the day had been received from the police.
Making sure all the vehicles, including bikes, are roadworthy.
Expect roadblocks this weekend
The 2019 Easter holiday is upon us and traffic on our roads will spike as holidaymakers search for rest and relaxation.
As such, roadblocks have also become a well-established feature of the holiday season, with police attempting to reduce the prevalence of unlicensed and intoxicated drivers during key travel windows.
