GEORGE NEWS - Rotarian Malcolm Pollard (80), a former president of the George Rotary Club and a passionate and dedicated member for the past 30 years, passed away at his home in George on Friday 17 November.
A memorial service will be held at St Mark's Cathedral today (Thursday 23 November) at 15:00.
Donald Goldfain of George Rotary Club says Pollard embodied the ideals of Rotary in all respects. "Malcolm was president of the George Rotary Club in 1991, acted as secretary for many years and his mentorship of younger Rotarians was an example to all.
"He was actively involved in the club's community service projects and had an unmatched attendance record.
"Malcolm was honoured by Rotary on two occasions with a Paul Harris Fellowship. He was a long-serving director of the George Service Clubs Utility Company (RLR Retirement Complex) and his wise counsel will be sorely missed. He was also involved in other community activities, including the Garden Route Botanical Garden, St Mark's Cathedral, the Wine Circle and the George Arts Theatre."
Pollard was born on 20 October 1937 in Cape Town and was educated at Diocesan College in Rondebosch and at the University of Cape Town. The family moved to George in 1987 where he was a partner in Schoombie, Hartman and Partners Quantity Surveyors.
He and his wife Wendy celebrated their 50th anniversary this year, the year of his 80th birthday.
He is survived by Wendy and their two children, Leigh and Trevor, and three grandchildren.
