GEORGE NEWS - In a special effort, George Preparatory School managed to collect a record amount of recyclable waste on Global Recycling Day on Monday 18 March.
They amassed a total of 12 000 bottles, which brings the total collected during the first quarter to over 30 000, according to Diane Venter, the teacher who spearheads all the school's green and eco-school projects.
Two sisters, both Grade 1s, stood out in their efforts to collect recyclables for Global Recycling Day.
Leigh Chay Lombaard collected 160 bottles, 40 tins and 3 511 plugs over one weekend. Her sister, Olivia Peda, collected 153 bottles at one sporting event.
Venter thanked Henque Waste, that removed the bags from the school premises.
"We also thank the Landmark Leopard and Predator Project of South Africa for their continued support of our recycling projects, and our parents and learners working together on the respective projects, as well as Christelle Visagie who handles the administration around the projects," said Venter.
