GEORGE NEWS AND GALLERY - Hundreds of Georgians gathered for the Annual Lights Festival on Saturday 13 December, which marked the official switching on of the city's festive lights by Mayor Browen Johnson and Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie.
The lively atmosphere brought families, friends and visitors together to enjoy music, food and festive cheer in a vibrant celebration of community spirit.
The weekend's festivities attracted over 6 000 festival-goers to York Street, setting the tone for continued celebrations across George and surrounding areas.
Part of the broader George Festival programme, the Lights Festival highlighted the city's unity and seasonal joy, while other festival events showcased local talent and creativity. The Long Table Event at the George Museum celebrated artists, authors, poets and musicians, offering a day filled with stories, music and community inspiration.

The inaugural Louis Massyn 10km Night Run saw Johnson and Mackenzie participate in George's first-ever night race, honouring the legacy of Louis Massyn.
Children and families enjoyed the kiddies fun zone at the Garden Route Botanical Garden, while sports enthusiasts cheered on their teams during the Zone 9 Cryuff Soccer Court five-a-side tournament in Thembalethu. Quarter-final matches saw Simunye, All Stars, Raul Stars and Paris United advance to the semi-finals, scheduled for Unity Park on 16 December.
The George Trail Run followed scenic Outeniqua Mountain routes, offering runners ideal conditions and a memorable experience.

Other festival highlights included table tennis competitions at the Rosemoor Indoor Arena and live entertainment along York Street, supported by local authorities, community policing and safety partners to ensure a safe and festive environment for all.
The George Festival continues to bring colour, excitement and community spirit to the city, celebrating local talent and fostering unity during the festive season.
