GEORGE NEWS - A local fisherman's outing with friends near Voëlklip, Herolds Bay, took a dramatic turn at about 09:00 on Tuesday morning when he lost his balance on the cliff slope while fishing and fell into a cavity, breaking his leg.
Frontier Medix was first on the scene, followed by the Metro Rescue Services. The Metro team made their way down a steep 50m to 100m slope on foot to reach the patient.
Using a specialised stretcher, they carefully carried him back to the top before he was transported to Mediclinic George, where he awaited surgery.
The fisherman, who asked to remain anonymous, admitted the mishap was his own fault. While grateful for the assistance, he downplayed the rescue drama, saying that Metro was just doing their job.
He also expressed his frustration at the reputation Voëlklip has gained in the media, insisting the area should not be unfairly stigmatised.
Voëlklip is notorious for the number of suicides, attempted suicides, accidents and drownings that have occurred there over the years.
The fisherman is transported to Mediclinic George.
