GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality Fire Department embarked on a three-month service and maintenance programme of the 2 129 fire hydrants in the municipal area yesterday, Thursday 1 February.
Protection Services Director Steven Erasmus says the annual service is required by the South African National Building Regulations to ensure all hydrants are in working order and operation-ready.
"The work includes pressure and flow tests, which means some loss of water due to flushing, but care is taken at all times to use only what is absolutely necessary to ensure hydrants are in tip-top condition. We appeal to the public to take heed of what it looks like when a fire hydrant is being serviced, and report any free-flowing water where municipal staff are not present. Where fire hydrants are being serviced, uniformed Fire Department or Civil Engineering Services staff and vehicles will be present and flowing water will be under controlled conditions."
Erasmus reminds all property owners that they are responsible for fire hydrants and equipment on their own premises, which also has to be serviced annually. "Maintaining fire hydrants and equipment is essential for the safety of citizens, especially in high density residential environments and at businesses using flammable materials, and we appeal to all property owners to comply at all times," said Erasmus.
Please report water leaks on 044 801 9262 or 044 801 6300 after hours.
