GEORGE NEWS - For more than three decades, Warrant Officer Samuel Gawie dedicated his life to serving and protecting his community.
His journey in the SAPS began on 28 March 1991, when he stepped into his role as a detective at Conville Police.
From the very start, his sharp investigative skills and determination set him apart. It did not take long for the people of Conville to notice his unwavering commitment to justice. They affectionately called him 'Faber', a testament to the trust and respect he earned through his work.
In 2004, he joined the George Detectives, tackling housebreaking cases, before transferring to Thembalethu, where he took on some of the region's most serious crimes. His relentless pursuit of justice led to life sentences for convicted murderers, proving his dedication to making communities safer.
Gawie was not just a detective - he was a beacon of hope for many.
In Thembalethu, an overwhelming 95% of the community admired him, and criminals even feared the mention of his name.
He was known for his tireless work ethic, but also for his willingness to guide and mentor young detectives, passing down his wisdom and experience to the next generation.
Throughout his career, he handled some of the toughest cases - murders, armed robberies, and more - never backing down, never giving up.
Even in his final years of service, he continued making an impact. In 2023 and 2024, he helped the Pacaltsdorp Detectives crack two high-profile murder cases, ensuring the suspects were arrested and brought to trial.
Gawie's passing leaves an undeniable void - not only in the police ranks, but in the hearts of those who knew and worked with him.
His legacy is not just in the cases he solved, but in the lives he touched, the justice he fought for and the safety he brought to so many.
Gawie's colleagues describe him as more than an officer. "He was a protector, a mentor and a friend. His dedication will never be forgotten, and his impact will live on," they said.
