GEORGE NEWS - Gender-based violence (GBV) is an alarming crisis in South Africa, but in the heart of the Southern Cape, a powerful force for change is rising. Legally You, a non-profit organisation founded in 2022, is tackling this epidemic head-on.
Led by Advocate Marilyn Scheepers Olifant and director Angelique Vezasie, Legally You is not just a lifeline for victims and survivors, it's a catalyst for awareness, support, and lasting change in the fight against GBV.
Origins and mission
Scheepers Olifant, with her extensive experience as a legal practitioner, identified a disturbing rise in GBV and domestic violence cases within her community. Recognising the critical role of education in preventing violence, and drawing on her background as a former lecturer at South Cape TVET College, she founded Legally You as a proactive solution to these challenges.
Collaborative efforts
Legally You understands that collaboration is essential for success. The organisation has established strong partnerships with key stakeholders.
Working closely with the police, the Department of Justice and the Department of Social Development, Legally You ensures that victims receive the necessary legal assistance and referrals.
By teaming up with various NGOs, Legally You extends its reach, providing additional resources and counselling to survivors.
Local businesses also play a crucial role in raising awareness, securing funding, and fostering community involvement.
Holistic approach
Legally You adopts a holistic approach to tackling GBV and domestic violence, focusing on prevention, education and support.
Through workshops, community outreach programmes and awareness campaigns, Legally You educates individuals on their rights and the importance of healthy relationships.
The organisation also conducts self-defence training and safety planning sessions, equipping individuals with the knowledge to prevent abuse. They also provide emotional support and legal guidance to help survivors navigate the challenges of trauma and the legal system, and reintegrate into society.
"It gladdens my heart to see how the people of George and the Southern Cape stand together. Our work is not just about responding to crises but preventing them by empowering communities and advocating for a safer society," said Scheepers Olifant.
