GEORGE NEWS - Police confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R1,4m during an intelligence-driven operation at two premises in Thembalethu in the early morning hours today, Thursday 3 November.
Members of George Public Order Police (Pop), Garden Route Crime Combatting Team and crime intelligence members were armed with a search warrant when they reacted on information about drug activities in the area.
On arrival at a residence in Johannes Street, Zone 9, they noticed the occupant of the premises surreptitiously throwing a key on the ground. The key was used to unlock a room where 19 bankies of Mandrax and tik were found stashed in the ceiling.
“Police confiscated 19 117 Mandrax tablets and 1,3kg of tik. The find subsequently led to the arrest of a 33-year-old woman on a charge of dealing in drugs,” said Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies.
A total of 54 Mandrax tablets and 13 bankies of tik estimated at about R7 200 were also confiscated from another residence in the same street. A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with the discovery. Both suspects remains in police custody. They will appear in court once charged.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile praised those who were instrumental in removing the drugs from the streets.
“These confiscations are in line with policing priorities of this province to rid communities of drugs because substance abuse remains a major generator of serious and violent crimes, especially gender-based violence and femicide. We shall sustain operations of this type as part of concerted efforts by police to safeguard communities and the most vulnerable in society,” Patekile said.
