GEORGE NEWS - After both lost their jobs last year, Thembalethu couple Thando Mgobo, his wife Nomvuselelo, and their four children, cried themselves to sleep on empty stomachs many a night.
It seemed as if there was no hope for a better tomorrow. However, the couple have set a new course: starting a recycling project in Thembalethu.
Their main motivation was to address the massive problem of illegal dumping in Thembalethu, which poses a health threat to the community.
The Mgobos encourage residents to take ownership of their living conditions by participating in the project. Thus they will help create a cleaner, healthier environment for the whole community, especially the children.
Such an ambitious project has its own challenges. The Mgobos are currently working from their backyard in Ramaphosa and hope that the municipality will provide them with bigger space to work from.
They also need a reliable vehicle that will enable them to handle more rubbish, as well as scales and other items to use for the system to operate smoothly.
The team of four are currently picking up recyclable materials from Mondays to Saturdays.
They resell everything to a local recycling company. They have also created job opportunities for two locals who help them pick up the recyclable materials around Thembalethu.
They urge the public to and bring their recyclables to their site in Afrika Street, Zone 6 in Ramaphosa. Community members who bring their recyclables will receive cash for the items.
