GEORGE NEWS - The launch of the South African leg of the non-profit organisation RUNN (Reform the United Nations Now) on 12 November at the University of the Western Cape, features various speakers, including Marius Fransman, former deputy minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
"This comes two years after the organisation was founded in New Mexico, on 1 November 2020," Hein Scheepers, a social activist from George, told talk show host Clarence Ford on 567AM Cape Talk yesterday, 2 November.
Youth ambassador Ras Hein, as Scheepers, a Rastafarian, presents himself, has been operating in civil society for the past decade. He now leads RUNN SA's upcoming launch and awareness campaign.
RUNN celebrated its two-year anniversary as an international organisation on 1 November. In short, the organisation aims to raise awareness through various platforms on focus areas such as Security Council reforms within the UN, climate change advocacy and youth empowerment.
"The United Nations Security Council will lose its relevance if it doesn't review its policies," said Scheepers.
Asked how RUNN will be getting more out of the UN in terms of reform, since there has been numerous calls for reforms - some driven by former secretary general Kofi Annan and currently, António Guterres - Scheepers said it is all about creating awareness.
"It takes generations," he said. "RUNN believes veto power must be taken away, and all countries should have the same pull, regardless of size."
