GEORGE NEWS - A regular hiker at the Garden Route Dam, Monique Commandeur, has a bouquet and a heartfelt thank you for two security guards and the local police.
On Sunday 5 May, she had a lovely hike around the dam with her dog, Donatello, but her bliss quickly evaporated upon reaching her car at the dam entrance where it hit her that she had lost her keys somewhere along the way.
She called a friend who came to help her find her keys. "We retraced my steps and walked the whole loop, but the keys were nowhere to be found. My friend then took me home and I had to leave my car at the dam's entrance."
Some time after the night shift took over at the entrance security checkpoint, a member of the public handed in Commandeur's keys. The guards could not find any clues in her car as to her identity, or a contact number. The security guards contacted the police and together they did a night-long search in the dam area.
When by morning they had not found anyone, the police phoned the Suzuki dealership after noticing the service book in her car.
"The police contacted me to inform me that my keys had been found and were at the dam.
"When I got to the dam, the two guards who spent the night searching were not there and I wanted to take my car and leave, but the security on duty insisted I wait until the police and two guards came.
"When they eventually arrived, they were so happy that I was alive and well.
"Their sincere concern about my well-being was truly touching, especially in our country where there is so much crime and violence.
"They went above and beyond their duty together with the police officers involved. I wish to thank them and the police for their caring attitude and the trouble they went to.
"The two guards are Lucky Mhlambiso and Vuyisile Mzini from Bokwe Security. I am deeply grateful towards them and wish to share my happy story with George Herald's readers."
