GEORGE NEWS - A letter ensuring credulous people a job at the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is currently doing the rounds.
The public is warned that this letter is fraudulent and the content false.
In the letter, "job applicants" are congratulated on applying successfully for the Western Cape Correctional Services 2018 Learnership Programme and then asked to pay a once-off admission fee of R150 for "administration purposes".
According to the letter, this is a BEE programme ("African Blacks, Coloureds and Indians") and as soon as the admission fee is paid the time and date for an "interview" will be arranged.
According to DCS's communications officer in the Southern Cape Johan Pienaar, the content of this letter is completely false.
The department does not accept any form of payment for job applications.
In addition to this, DCS only advertises specific positions.
Each position has a unique reference number and the minimum requirements for each position are clearly stated.
Pienaar told the George Herald that the letter was sent to them by a member of the public who knew a member of Correctional Services in Mossel Bay.
"It was then brought to the attention of the acting head of Mossel Bay Correctional Services, who sent it to our human resources department for information.
"We can't confirm where this letter originated and up to now we are unaware of anyone having fallen victim to the scam," he said.
