GEORGE NEWS - On Saturday 4 June, a forest clean-up was arranged by local resident Michael Bailey.
Being a frequent user of the forest around George with a strong interest in protecting the environment, and also a keen trail runner, Bailey noticed that there has been a lot of litter lying around.
He decided the get the local community involved to help clean up in the forest near Camphersdrift. It was a fantastic turnout with over 40 people and it was great to see everyone's enthusiasm.
In just over an hour, more than 70 black bags of garbage were collected and removed from the forest and placed in a skip sponsored by Bok Bakke Skips.
"We hope to see an even bigger group next time," said Bailey.
It was not the first clean-up in this section of forest. The previous clean-up took place on 30 May and 31 bags of rubbish were picked up.
Bailey thanked everyone who took some time out of their weekend to assist, as well as Bok Bakke Skips for their sponsorship.
Bailey said this clean-up was very timely arranged seeing as World Environmental Day was on 5 June. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1973, World Environment Day has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet.
