GEORGE NEWS - Learners from schools in Thembalethu will be showcasing their creative flair through a waste clothing design competition on Friday 27 September between 12:00 and 15:00 at the Tyolorha Primary School hall.
The competition is organised by the Community in Blue, a community outreach organisation for young police members, in collaboration with the Community Police Forum of Thembalethu.
Constable Mona Slinger from Thembalethu SAPS, the main organiser, says their aim is to create awareness about waste management and sustainability in the Thembalethu community.
"We are encouraging creative thinking and resourcefulness among children around the problem of increasing numbers of illegal waste dumps and littering.
"We want to make them realise that the importance of recycling and that it can be useful in creating stuff. Participants must design and make their own outfits from paper, plastic or any other waste material they can find."
Slinger said Thembalethu is expanding at a rapid pace. "We want it to become a cleaner, healthier and more eco-friendly place that everyone can enjoy. Waste dumps are so prevalent.
"We hope that campaigns such as this will start opening the eyes of young people and will give them a vision for a sustainable community living in a sustainable manner.
"Children are the generation of the future and they need to be aware of the huge impact that waste is having on the environment as well as our community's health."
Entrance to the competition is R10 for adults and R5 for children of 18 years and younger. Contact Const Slinger on 072 891 7107 for more information about the competition.
