GEORGE NEWSFLASH - There was a five-fold increase over the past 20 years in the number of babies in South Africa that are being breast-fed, according to the South African Breastmilk Reserve (SABR).
SABR Executive Director Stasha Jordan says in 1998 the South African demographic and health survey (SADHS) found that just 7% of infants under the age of six months were exclusively breast-fed.
According to the latest edition of the survey, the proportion had increased to 32% by 2016.
This is due to the SABR providing access to breast milk banks and breastfeeding support to mothers, in partnership with the various health departments, Discovery and Netcare.
