GEORGE NEWS - A story about a multi-million rand development in Victoria Bay posted on the George Herald website on 1 April had a couple of people fooled for a while.
The supposed development would consist of a small craft harbour, helipad and harbour blocks in the sea to protect houses from high seas.
The historic pier would make way for the supposed harbour. Dennis Venter, owner of The Black Pearl, would have a helipad on the hill at the back of his home to fly in tourists.
Noel Weyer did not think much of the effort towards an April Fool's story and commented on Facebook, "A better April fool's joke would be that council is going to raise the dam wall soon." A quote from Rod Hossack, well-known Vic Bay resident and surfer who supposedly welcomed the development, was a giveaway, said Christo Boshoff. "Rod will never support anything like this," he said.
Bernice Smith thought the whole thing was true. "Leave it alone! Don't spoil something that's good. That pier and the pool were built by Bram Butler who had the big house above them....Forget this stupid idea."
Anton Lombard also got caught out. "Ja nee. Nou kom daar weer hekke op en ons moet betaal vir die toegang van die ontwikkeling om te swem. Wat is die Helipad voor? Net vir die rykes seker om geraas te maak."
James Kaufmann played along with his own idea: "There are many boxes of human ashes and memorial plaques at the end. Perhaps, instead of boxes of ashes, they could open an eco-friendly - well not exactly a crematorium / cemetery type of thing. Something more along the lines of a, circle of life sea body disposal service. Which could operate in conjunction with a shark cage diving outfit..."
