GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality's Community Development Unit and the LoveLife program of the Department of Health have launched the Adopt-a-Granny initiative, fostering an intergenerational connection within George communities.
This program involves youth organising pampering sessions for the elderly, while the elderly share skills like needlework with the young.
Launched in 2017, the program aims to provide support services to the elderly through youth workers, covering areas like Rosemoor, Pacaltsdorp and Blanco. Activities include home cleaning, medication assistance and recreational activities.
This program has evolved into a platform for the exchange of skills and knowledge between generations, including potential assistance with technology.
The Youth Development Section of the municipality leads diverse projects, striving to support youth-related issues.
The program addresses the often overlooked contributions of the elderly, emphasizing the municipality's commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals. Implemented mainly through Youth Peer Educators, the program serves to pass on skills and at the same time provide care services for elderly individuals left without support throughout the day.
Youth and youth organisations keen on joining the program can contact the Youth Office at 044 802 2000.
Community youth in conjunction with LoveLife of the Department of Health, pampered their community’s elderly at the Restoration Life Worship Centre.
