GEORGE NEWS - The George Camera Club's winning photos for July.
• Theme railway - Train photographer - Schalk Engelbrecht
This photo was taken one early morning in August 2010 near the town of Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State. The fireman and driver produced the black and white smoke which drifted in the morning breeze to allow for an interesting picture. Taken with my Canon EOS 7D at ISO 200, f/7.1 and 1/500th sec. Sadly steam trains are disappearing from our landscape.

• Junior open - Pigeon lady - Lorraine Blackwell
I was standing across the road from a park opposite Notre Dame in Paris, when I noticed this woman feeding pigeons. She was completely captivated and delighted by them and really didn't mind that they were mobbing her for the seed she had. I loved her interest in them and wanted to take her photo without her noticing and changing her expression. Luckily, she didn't look my way, so I zoomed in and snapped a few close-up shots. I liked this one the best. The shot was taken with a Nikon D5500 and a Nikon 70 – 200mm lens at 200mm, f/4 at 1/160th sec.
• Junior nature - Flock together - George Morrison
During my recent tour through Namibia and Botswana I came upon these waders (Stilts and Avocets, part of the Family Recurvirostrida) feeding in the salt pans on the outskirts of Walvis Bay. It was late afternoon and I shot handheld using a sandbag as stabiliser.
Camera was a Canon 7D , f/8 at 1/1250 , ISO 400 , Tamron 150-600 lens @ 350mm in Raw format.
Post-production editing was done in Adobe Raw and Photoshop CS5.
• Senior nature - Leopard and cub - Peter van der Byl
This was an early morning shot taken at 06:45 of the leopard named Rockfig and her cub, both of which remarkably have blue eyes. The cub's blue eyes are even more prominent than the mother's. They were spending time grooming each other with the cub lovingly chewing something on the mother's head. The farm in the Timbavati where this was taken is named "Rockfig", after the leopard.
Equipment used: Canon 1DX with a Canon 200-400mm f4 lens using the built-in 1.4 extender to achieve the range of 506mm.
Aperture was f/5.7, ISO 800 and a shutter speed of 100th sec was used with the camera resting on a bean bag.
This was taken from an open game drive vehicle.
We have subsequently visited the farm again and were delighted to meet up with the cub, which has grown into a beautiful specimen.
Die George-kameraklub kom elke 3de Dinsdag van die maand om 18:30 in die Langgebou agter die Moederkerk bymekaar.
