GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - The sod-turning for the biggest private solar plant to date to be installed in George took place on Monday. It will be wheeling 9MW at peak into George Municipality's grid.
The Gwayang Private Solar Wheeling Plant, owned and to be installed by South African company Solar Energy Africa (SEA), will consist of 13 496 solar panels, each delivering 615W.
The project, located on a farm near George Airport, will provide electricity to some of the largest electricity consumers in George.
George Mayor Jackie von Brandis, who did the turning of the soil with Western Cape Infrastructure Minister Tertuis Simmers, called it a groundbreaking project for the city.
She said it is the first private independent power producer to conclude a contract with the municipality, and it is a 9MW plant at that. The municipality has done some of its own solar installations, but not at this scale.
Western Cape Infrastructure Minister Tertuis Simmers praised SEA and George Municipality for their efforts in concluding a contract.
He stressed the importance of partnerships between government and the private sector for infrastructure expansion, especially considering the massive influx of people into the Western Cape.
The technical specifications of the plant are as follows:
- 8,30MWp Grid-Tied Solar Farm
- 8MW AC output
- Two 4,48MW transformers
- 13 496 solar panels (615W each)
- 25 Sungrow inverters (350kW each)
