GEORGE NEWS - The Open Day of Nelson Mandela University George Campus saw close to 800 visitors, including learners, parents, teachers and community stakeholders, visiting the campus over two days - 3 and 4 May.
Alet van Tonder, the communications manager, says visitors made full use of the opportunity to engage with the staff at the thirty stalls. All the stalls were geared to respond to questions prospective students may have about possible future studies and support services offered by Mandela University.
Visitors could also view the campus with its facilities and attend several information sessions that provided more detail on the university's new admission score system, which will be applicable from the 2020 academic year.
"While most of the visitors were from schools and TVET Colleges in George and the surrounding towns such as Great Brak River, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn, Albertinia, Uniondale and Calitzdorp, several other groups and individual visitors came from as far afield as Vredendal, East London, Bredasdorp, Paarl, Fish Hoek, Cape Town and other Western Cape towns, Johannesburg and Kwazulu Natal (Maritzburg College), to experience the campus in person," says Van Tonder.
She says learners who had already made up their minds to study at one of the seven Nelson Mandela University campuses (one in George and six in Port Elizabeth) next year, also used the opportunity to receive guidance with the online application process by the university's admission staff.
Lecturers shared their passion for their areas of expertise, along with useful information for prospective students, through a series of live radio interviews broadcast by EDENfm from the George Campus throughout both days, further extending the message of education as a means of empowering young people to "Change the World".
Both the opening and closing of the event were facilitated by David Alexander, the acting campus principal.
